Change of state

17.1 Changes That Occur During a Change of State

A substances changes its state when it gains heat or losses heat. Color, Shape, volume and texture are some of the physical properties that can change during a change of state.

Some example of change of state around us are:

Hardening of wax

                                                                        Drying of water puddles

Melting of butter

17.2 Changes Of State In Water

                                                          Melting
                        Melting
                   Ice------->Water
                     (heat gain)

 Boiling                        Boiling
                            Water------>Steam
                                  (heat gain)

                     Evaporation

 Water------>Water Vapour
      (Heat Gain)

Change of State when water loses heat

Freezing
                             Water------>Ice
                                 (Heat Loss)

               Condensation of Water Vapour

               Water Vapour------>Water
                                  (Heat Loss)

Condensation of  Steam
              Steam------>Water
                    (Heat loss)

                         Thank you for Seeing Change of State

Evaporation

Experiment by group 3:Hansel(Leader), Marvel, Justin, Andrew and Egan.
There will be only 1 experiment that I will show you today.

Experiment 1:Evaporation experiment
Steps:
1.mix the water with the salt.                                                                                        Materials:
                                                                                                                               -Candle bottle
                                                                                                                               -Tripod
                                                                                                                               -Bowl(Small)
              no image                                                                                                   -Water
                                                                                                                               -Salt

2.Pour the liquid to the bowl.                                                                                  3.Put on the fire

4.Wait until the water evaporate.

Thats all for the steps, then now I learn what is evaporation.

                                         In the right is the picture of water vapor -->>

Separating solid by Filtering

 Experiment by group 3:Hansel, Marvel, Justin, Andrew and Egan.
There will be 2 experiment that we will show you. I will tell you the materials for these 2 experiments:
1st experiment:                                                2nd experiment:
-Water             -Beaker                                   -Water         -Beaker
-Sand               -Stopwatch                             -Flour          -Stopwatch
-Filter funnel     -Filter Paper                            -Filter funnel-Filter paper
-plastic spoons                                                 -Plastic spoon

Experiment 1 : Sand water
Steps:

1.Put the water into a beaker.                                       2.Put the sand inside the small beaker

3.Stir with the plastic spoons.                               4.Put the liquid in the filter funel +filter paper+Big beaker.

You can observe that when the sand water when it was poured into the beaker Inside of it it became a water without any particles. That's all for experiment 1 now we are going to go to our next experiment which is experiment 2(Experiment "Flour Water").

 Experiment 2: Flour Water
This experiment is similar to experiment 1. Hope you like it(^_^).
Steps:

 1.Put the water into the beaker.                                                                  2.Put the flour inside the beaker.
                  3.Stir                                                                               4.Put the liquid in the funnel+filter paper+beaker.

You can observe what happened to the flour water when it is poured up to the big beaker then became dirty white coloured water. This is All for seperating solid by filtering.

 This activity could be proven in Science workbook 5B
